Rutland & Melton MP Alan Duncan today welcomed the Boundary Commission’s preliminary proposals for revised constituency sizes.

The changes, which will see the number of MPs in the House of Commons reduced by 50 to 600, have left the Rutland & Melton seat unscathed. The proposals are the start of a two year process, at the end of which the electoral map will have undergone significant change, with less disparity between the number of electors in each. A written and oral consultation process will now take place throughout the country.

Alan said: ‘I am pleased that the Boundary Commission has chosen to keep Rutland & Melton together and to retain the existing boundaries. The nationwide restructuring of boundaries is vital to make the system fairer, but Rutland & Melton has always been around the right size in terms of number of electors. The commission has taken this into account, along with the strong ties within the area. I will be writing to the Commission to encourage them to uphold their suggestion when the final decision is taken, and would encourage others to do so too.’
