On Friday 15th June, Alan visited the farmers’ market in Melton Mowbray to pledge his support for the ‘Love Your Local Market’ fortnight which begins on Saturday 23rd June.
The fortnight is part of a current parliamentary campaign called the ‘Charter for Town Centres’ which encourages MPs to promote commercial and community engagement with their local towns and markets.
Alan said: “The Charter for Town Centres, together with the Portas Review and the establishment of Business Improvement District companies, is putting our towns and markets right at the centre of the political debate.
“We need to make Melton as welcoming as possible and help it show off its historical charm. This encompasses everything from street scene to public toilets. Parking is OK but the charges on market day are unfair.
“The bigger picture is we need a ring road for Melton, that would make the town centre more attractive and vibrant, and we need to make the pedestrian link between the Sainsbury’s site, cattle market and town centre more inviting.”
